There has been some strong opinion expressed following one London law firm’s ban of fishnet tights. It’s a question of degree, but just as with the “smart casual” conundrum, not everyone gets it right. The real issue is not whether women lawyers should wear fishnets to work, but that they are not aware of the messages they are sending out and how this affects their career prospects. One lawyer is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying:
“Some of our trainees and newly qualifieds look like lap-dancers. Maybe they’re just trying to snare a husband and don’t see a longterm future for themselves in the law but I know I wouldn’t take them to a client meeting looking like that.”
It’s tough getting promoted when you’re getting yourself noticed for the wrong reasons.
